Frequently Asked Questions from Parents:

What is the purpose of the trip? This trip is more discipleship oriented than anything else. While we do have a lot of fun--a lot of fun--there is also a huge discipleship emphasis. During the eight days, the teens will do about 1 hour of nightly devotions with their room sponsor each right, listen to 4 or 5 recorded sermons on the road, participate in evening worship times and messages (by myself) each of the four days we are in Myrtle Beach, and also attend three electives by different sponsors on various topics. I think that one of the reasons why this trip is so powerful to so many teens is because they are able to break away from the normal pressures and influences of the world for an extended period of time to focus primarily on God and their relationship to Him.

Where will they be staying? We will be staying at the Surfside Beach Resort in Surfside, South Carolina and other hotels during the drive. The phone number for Surfside Beach Resort is 843-238-4444.  We provide parents with additional contact info for the hotels before we go.

What is the adult/teen ratio? 1 adult sponsor for each 4 teens. There is an adult in each room.

Who are the adults going along? Although all of the adult leaders have not yet been determined, this trip will be staffed mainly by the current Peace Church High School youth sponsors. Many of these sponsors, including myself and my wife Hope, are parents. I (Nate) have been the youth director at Peace Church since 1998 and this will be my 14th Spring Break trip.

How are they getting there? Will kids be required/permitted to drive or will you have designated drivers? We take our church bus, and the van if needed. Teens have never, and will never, be allowed to drive. All of our bus drivers have their bus license.

How wild is Myrtle Beach? Our hotel is actually in Surfside Beach, a few miles south of Myrtle Beach. It is a very family friendly location. It isn't packed with college students, and this isn't the right time for their spring breaks either.

What rules do you have? We want all the teens to be safe and to have a good trip. All teens will be required to agree in writing to a list of rules similar to these. The sponsors do enforce the rules. They are:

1. I understand that Spring Break is a group retreat and not an individual vacation.  Therefore I will attend all required group times.  This includes room devotions, required activities and meetings.  I will follow curfews, schedules, be on time, and pay attention during meetings.  I will not leave meetings without permission.

2. At no time will I have in my possession any illegal drugs, tobacco, alcohol, weapons, sexually explicit material, or fireworks.  I also will not obtain any of these during the trip.

3. Except for a suntan, I will return with the same approximate physical features I currently possess.  This means no body piercing (including ears), tattoos, weird haircuts, etc.  Even if you say your parents don’t mind, the answer is still “no.”

4. I will refrain from any physical displays of affection during this trip.  (Please, nothing more than holding hands.  Also, no co-ed backrubs or lying in each other’s laps.)  I also realize that the purpose of this trip is to connect with God, not a boyfriend or girlfriend.

5. My language and conduct will be respectful to the sponsors, other students, other hotel guests, hotel management, property, etc.  I will not do anything disrespectful or destructive.  Particularly, I will follow the sponsors’ instructions, respect their judgment, and cooperate.  (Use common sense; be quiet and courteous at the hotel, especially late at night.)

6. I will not wander off or go anywhere alone.  I will not be alone with a member of the opposite sex.  I will not go off with people who aren’t from our group.  I will make sure that the sponsors know where I am at all times.

7. No pranks are allowed.  In the past, they have always gotten out of hand by the end of the week.  We do not need the hurt feelings, or the distraction from the purpose of the trip.

8. I understand that there are to be no girls in guys’ rooms or guys in girls’ rooms.  I will not leave my room at all after curfew.

9. At no time will I go into a hotel room, vehicle, etc. of someone who is not from our group!  (or vice-verse)

10. I understand that if I bring anything that I’m not supposed to bring, I shouldn’t expect to get it back.

11. Attitudes make or brake Spring Break trips.  I realize that my attitude not only affects me, but everyone on the trip.  I realize that my attitude is a choice.  I will choose to keep a healthy attitude even when there are things I don’t like.

12. I agree to these rules as a condition to attend Spring Break 2012.  I understand that failure to follow these rules could result in discipline such as work detail or even being sent home at my parent’s expense.

[The rules in the final copy of the Conduct Agreement may be slightly edited from the rules listed above.]

What do you allow for swimwear? High School guys need help keeping lust in check, so because of that we ask that girls dress modestly.  They will be given further instructions on swimwear at a girl's meeting as we get closer to the trip.  For swimwear, please only bring either a one-piece or a "tank-ini."  A modest two-piece could be worn with a t-shirt over it.  If you have further questions, talk to Hope Archer or one of the other women sponsors.  (If girls decide to go sunbathing, the rule for the guys is that they have to stay away as far as they can throw a football.)

Other Questions: email NateArcher@peacechurch.cc or give me a call at church 616 891-8119 or at home 269 795-7044.  You may consider yourself pesky, but I consider you a good parent for asking!
